I received this letter from a friend who is a reputable oncologist doctor in Los Angeles. Since I was encouraged by him to do so, I felt like it was important to share this valuable information, which is based on this article:

It seems that Vitamin D levels in the blood > 80 nmol or 32 mg per dL gives a zero incidence mortality from #COVID-19, and 34 gives a zero incidence of disease. This sounds too good to be true, but the relationship between ARDS (respiratory failure) and vitamin D deficiency has been known for a long time.

You should 1) know your serum 25OH-vitamin D level and 2) optimize it to at least 35 ng/dL or 80 nMol. You can get a zinc level while you are at it, since #zinc deficiency is also prevalent 20% and produces suboptimal viral immunity.

Vitamin D deficiency is highly prevalent, especially during winter months when the sun never gets high enough in the sky to generate the wavelength that makes the chemical reaction in your skin. Almost everyone is vitamin D deficient unless they are supplementing. If your levels are low, you will need large doses for several months to normalize them, even up to 10,000 units per day.  It cannot be normalized faster because it dissolves in adipose tissues.

Once you are in respiratory failure (which I hope will never happen to you!), of course, it is too late to turn to vitamin D, but it may prevent you from ever getting to that point. One of the implications of this paper is that normalizing vitamin D status could be a strategy for ending the need for social distancing and getting back to normal.

So, let’s all get these #Vitamin D and #Zinc levels checked!
